Forefathers

Journal Entry: Tue Feb 26, 2008, 11:42 AM
Welcome to the online gallery of Clive (c1890-1939) and George Semmens (1920-1993), grandfather and father respectively of *coshipi and *Wodewose, great-grandfather and grandfather of *conskeptical and ~cocooned

I'm complicating this somewhat now: I'm starting to add some photographs of paintings done by Kenneth Rainbow (1888-1958), grandfather (on the other side) of *coshipi and *Wodewose, great-grandfather of *conskeptical and ~cocooned.

The hard bit for me - the reason these will appear one by one and have only just started appearing - is that they're in frames, behind glass, and I don't want to take them out of their frames. I've set up a method of avoiding reflections, but it's a cobbled together method. It's not worth the effort of setting up an efficient process for the relatively small number of paintings involved at each location.

Hehe, photography really seems to be a family business for you, with six accounts and seven family memers having their photos posted to dA ;]
Must be very strange especially for Clive Semmens's photos since he didn't even dream of computers in his lifetime (unless he happened to work for the top secret Colossus project...) let alone the internet!

I got my first camera from my father, but except for that my love of photography developed all by itself without any input from my family...

You're right. Most of my grandfather's photos have probably not been seen for at least 67 years, and quite likely not for a while before that - indeed they've probably never been seen as large or clear as they are now appearing here, apart from the obvious dirt and damage some of the negs have suffered. I hope others are enjoying their appearance now as much as I'm enjoying discovering them. I think he'd have approved, though I say that without ever having met him, since he was killed 18 years before my birth.

Yes, it's a glimpse into the history of photography as well as into your family's history, and therefore even interesting to those that don't know your family!

Thank you - obviously that's what I hoped. As it goes on, there will be images that are of historic interest well beyond the history of photography too :)
